Wow...good question. I'm not sure if I'll cover all of your points, but here's my experience. In the late 70's, I remember as a kid seeing the commercials during Saturday morning cartoons with the lone soldier returning from Vietnam with no welcome back, empty bandstand, no parade, nothing. Being being the slight drama queen I was, these commericals always made me cry and still fill me with sorrow when I think of them. I asked my mother why people were being so mean and she said that people fear what they don't understand and some not very nice stuff was being said on the news about what had happened there. So, I learned early not to trust the news. In my mid-20's I worked in the kitchen of a pub with a Vietnam Vet with I think pretty was pretty screwed up, despite the amount of alcohol he consumed constantly. Mostly, he was just fun, drunk "Cook", but when there was a loud noise, we all literally had to "hit the deck" and if we didn't, he would almost tackle us to the floor. He never talked about it and none of us mentioned it as something unusual. I don't know if that was because we didn't want to embarass him or if we were too embarrassed ourselves. As I see my 21-year old nieces friends heading to Iraq - I see a lot of drunken bravado - so I don't know what will happen when they return.
Regardless - I think avenues such as writing...anything, poetry, just an account of what happened, foregivness notes to oneself, music..anything is good "just to get it out". If it's a matter of not telling - keep a lighter and a steel trash can near by and burn upon completion. I don't know, maybe silly, but just getting it out would seem to be a good start - even if it's just pen to paper.
Thanks, Drew, for bringing this up, because I did see the movie, but failed to see the relevance for soldiers today. Will keep that in mind - as I always try to thank a veteran when I learn of their service. It's depressing though about how many of them are surprised by the simple words, "Thank You". Tear.
