Some Kind of Paradise - something I've always wondered |
Lead | |
|
Is there a story on why a another song (i.e. "you are my sunshine" or some sort of christmas song) is picked before Kev plays "Some Kind of
Paradise"? I've always wanted to know, but keep forgetting to ask. It's a slow day in the office and "Live from Melbourne" is playing
on the ipod...so I FINALLY remembered.
Peace Out, M. |

This is actually an interesting topic.
The song , if considered as poetry, should mean what it means to the listener , or reader , at the time they hear or read it. That would be the ultimate goal of writing I guess, to find a Universal Truth or appeal for each person that participates. It doesn't have to mean what the author meant it to be. The broader the appeal, the more successful the song. "Some Kind of Paradise" seemed to me to be an everyman's view of the life of Jesus.....or not. Maybe it just said that to me because of my very basic approach to spirituality, my disinterest in dogma and the naive sort of "golden rule" approach that I believe in. It could be about my Uncle Carl Lanier Garrett. Probably not since the author did not know him, but the song fits him in so many ways that I think of him every time I hear it. I can't speak for Kevin , but he seems to like a nice intro with the lowered bass. Perhaps it is just art for art's sake but, given the "Silent Night" intro that I have heard attached to this song so many times, it reinforces the spiritual side of it for me. But then, I'm usually wrong when it comes to interpretations. Anyone else have a theory before Kevin shows up and points out the errors in my thinking ? PMG So, after listening to the song I realized that it is pitched in D but the timbre of the notes in the intro seem to indicate that it is played out of an E chord shape? Anyway, that is how it seems to be today. Yesterday I thought it was Drop D but that is the version I lifted from John Fahey.

It's funny what we think we hear...I always hear "You are My Sunshine" as the intro to the song...

Could be.....I would have sworn he has used Silent Night before as well. But then, I have very old and abused ears.

On "Live from Melbourne" it's "You are my Sunshine". The last couple times I've heard him play live, it's been "Silent
Night". So EVERYONE is right...HURRAY!

was having auditory hallucinations .

I too have heard both intro's....I just was wondering why this song in particular. (Maybe it's just my musical ignorance....the reason I don't
know.) I liked PMG's theory. I'm curous about the thinking behind it and really about songwriting in general-the process.
(Sorry, my head is not quite functioning at top-speed today.) |

To me, those kinds of songs are sort of like movies. An intro used in that way is a bit of soundtrack to the film. The night from that recording was, I think,
the only time I ever tried You are my Sunshine, and I screwed it up. I think someone even laughed. When I use Silent Night, the music stops right when you
would say, Sleep in Heavenly........(peace).

oh okay | ||

yes, I see...the song is the movie and intro sets the mood..."sleep in heavenly peace" because of the death in the song; "you are my
sunshine....please don't take my sunshine away"
nice, very nice...I appreciate that so much more now ;-))) |

I hate that Kevin remembers someone laughing.....oh, we're all so hard on ourselves....

No.... | ||

I always thought someone near the mic was telling a story we can't hear and the laughter resulted from that....don't remember any errors in "you
are my sunshine"...and trust me I would know - I listen to that CD every morning while I move straws around the country. Makes my very important job a
lot less boring.
