Kieran Kane's New CD: "Somewhere Beyond the Roses" |
Lead | |
|
Kieran's new CD, Somewhere Beyond the Roses, will be out July 28! It's pretty cool, with not only Kieran
(playing banjo) but also a baritone sax, an electric guitar, and percussion. Kieran's written or co-written (with David Francey, David Olney, or John
Hadley) 10 of the 11 songs on it. It's gonna be good! Kieran's daughter Lucy designed the cover.

If the EP he was selling down here in March is anything to go by (and of course it is, it's what he'd recorded up to that point) it'll be a
beauty...I love his "new" sound. The sax player is from Lambchop I believe. It's been a while since his last one...only a month to go! Alrighty!

Am really happy that one of America's finest songwriters has a new CD out.
A bit bummed Kieran won't be at Sisters Folk Festival with Kevin and Co. right after Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Fest in SF. Damn! |

Heard "Way Down Below" on the radio... | ||

Allison Brock played it on her show on CKUA last Saturday. I likey
I don't mean to be nosy or gossipy or anything, but .... Compass Records? Not Dead Reckoning Records? Is "the band" breaking up? Is Oct 16 the last time I will hear my marvy 'mericans live, unless I go south? |

I pre-ordered a few weeks ago from Amazon. Sigh. One day my disk will come. I nosed around looking for a dl site, but they all have pre-ordering, too.
Aside from Kieran's new disk there are some others I'm anticipating greatly. Principal among them is the Mississippi Sheiks tribute album produced by Steve Dawson (one of my faves). It features a variety of cool musicians, with all new recordings of Sheiks songs. Everyone from Madeleine Peyroux to John Hammond to the North Carolina Chocolate Drops to Bill Frisell to Geoff Muldaur, and a bunch more. See http://www.blackhenmusic.com/. Otherwise I've been enjoying some old music (early recordings by Zubot and Dawson, the Dawson being Steve Dawson, see above, Brian Wilson's Smile, Cat Power's Covers Album, Dolly Parton's bluegrass trilogy-- Little Sparrow, Halos and Horns, The Grass is Blue) and some new (Steve Earle's Townes, Teddy Thompson's A Piece of What You Want, Canadian group Hey Rosetta, Leonard Cohen's Live in London). Speaking of Leonard, Catherine gave me tickets for his concert in Kingston (east of Toronto) a couple of months ago. I haven't been a huge fan of the man himself, although his songs are remarkably wonderful. But I have to tell ya, it was probably the best concert I've ever been to. Huge audience in a hockey arena, excellent excellent sound, and there's Leonard bounding on stage like a youngster, crack band, excellent auxiliary singers, a wonderful evening. If you ever get the chance to catch him, don't hesitate. He's old, there aren't going to be too many more tours. Been away from the board for a while. Glad to get back. Ron |

Finally!
The tax man came good for me this year so first thing to do when I found out all was good was to run was off to the music shop to get my copy of 'Somewhere Beyond The Roses'. I knew it was there because I'd been in the store to ask and have visited often since to look at it ...and pat it.... and tell it "one day please please please be mine!" Already love every bit of the cd..... of course! Thanks Kieran and co...... Peace and many smiles. Sue |

Found "Somewhere Beyond The Roses" on sale at my local indie store, The Electric Fetus! I'm really digging the arrangements, a bit of a new sound
for Kieran and the writing is as stellar as always. I'm still reminded a bit of the band Morphine with the baritone sax - sort of a Roots/Americana version
of Morphine, if you will. If you don't know their stuff, they balanced a fine and artistic line between rock and jazz, with an odd trio (2-string bass,
baritone sax, drums) led by the late, brilliant Mark Sandman. Here are a couple of faves:

Still digging the music, but not so much the packaging - is anyone else having glue from the cardboard sleeve releasing onto the edges of the disk? I've
been carrying it about in the car during our late summer warm spell and am finding globs of glue on the disk when I take it out of the sleeve. I guess I'll
have to ditch the original sleeve and put it in a jewel case or something.
