isn't there some macabre irony in the fact that ryan seacrest insists on reporting that "michael jackson touched a lot of people"...

The grim reaper seems to be very active lately, you can add Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon to the list. Wonder who's next?

I'm gonna be self-indulgent and narcissistic and pray it's not anyone I love.....but I did care quite a lot about F and MJ; in the schemata sense.

Yeah, what passes for journalism these days is positively shameful...
I was never a big fan of MJ's music - not really my style, but respected his artistry for sure. Eddi Reader had some very nice thoughts on her board today: http://www.eddireader.co....rum/viewtopic.php?t=1273 Now then, Eddi's music...sigh. She's brilliant! She has a wonderful album out -"Love Is The Way" - which is all over her MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/eddireader |

speaking of shameful... | ||

of all the rights we are fortunate to experience in this country, freedom of speech and freedom of the press are the two i feel are the most precious...but
they also come with responsibility...i currently reside in south carolina and our govenor has been behaving in ways that are not exactly the conservative,
family value, christian, fiscally responsible ways he has always claimed are his core...to be more precise, he has been using my and other sc
taxpayers'money to fly to argentina to bang some buenos aires babe...and then attempts to cover his tracks claiming he was hiking the appalachian
trail...he should be impeached, imprisoned, and impaled...the only reason he is still in office is our lt. govenor is even more screwed up...
somehow the major newspaper in south carolina, "the state", obtained e-mails between the govenor and his personal eva peron...then saw fit to publish them...okay, that's where i feel they crossed the line...the govenor has four young sons...can you imagine what they are being put through?...and the defense is that the govenor should have considered that before he made the choices he did...but isn't hypocritical to call him out on damaging his family then publish information that will cause more damage...let's show some decency...sometimes even though the public has a right to know doesn't mean they should know...i really don't know who i'm more disgusted with...govenor sanford for his behavior or the editors at the "state" who have abandoned all humanity...new mexico becomes more appealing everyday... n

Amen to that.....
Deepfreud, absolutely he ( and all those other idiots who are discovered to be incapable of properly governing ) should be immediately turfed. Once there idiocy is openly discovered, out they go! I don't know why we allow and accept such lunacy. And believe me it's not just SC, Canada,,,, has our fair share of them. |

Someone once said that prostitution is the world's oldest profession, and politics is the second. And you get screwed by both.

Let's see, what can I come up with here . . . "He only lied about sex . . . what he does in his personal life is none of our business . . .
", etc., etc., etc. Of course, I actually agree with you, but I am laughing at the media folks & Dem politicians who are so outraged about this. Talk
about hypocrisy.

On a more positive note, the phrase "Hiking the trail" could take on a whole new life as a euphemism. But that's me, Mr. Glass-is-half-full...
Mark Twain (if he is indeed the source) had it right, lo those many years ago - "Politicians and diapers should be changed often and for the same reason." While I will normally and happily bash the collective media for their complete and abject abandonment of all journalistic principle and responsibility, what an elected Governor does on the people's time using the people's technology is the people's business, unseemly as it may be. Assuming the emails were sent using his official email addy, the newspaper is on solid ground to publish the content, unseemly as it may be. |

and therein lies the rub...i do not disagree that they are solid ground legally and even journalistically (?) (although the term muckraking
comes to mind)...but it disturbs me when legal, journalistic, even ethical arguments trump simple human decency...for all of dylan's masterfully complex
lyrics, my favorite line of his is from you're gonna make me lonesome when you go..."if something ain't right, it's wrong"...did
the state have the right to publish the e-mails?...sure...did they do the right thing by publishing them?...absolutely not...

Well...some of our most celebrated early 20th century American writers (Sinclair Lewis, Jacob Riis, Nellie Bly, etc.) were muckrakers. In its purest form,
muckraking would lead to the very reform you originally seemed to be seeking - through the at times uncomfortable shedding of a very bright light on the
illicit and very likely illegal activities of said office holder, reporting on said activities with any and all valid and supporting evidence with the intent
of removing him from the Governorship of South Carolina and restoring the office to one of integrity, honor and leadership. Unfortunately, what was once
muckraking has devolved into sensationalism (now you've gotten me started...) and 'gotcha' stories. In this case, it sounds as if the
formerly-Honorable Gov. Sanford 'got' himself and facts are now being brought to light. Some unseemly and embarrassing facts, to be sure, yet still
pertinent and central to story. Stories, such as this, of such acts of hubris are all too uncommon and have left us with all sorts of imagery and
colloquialisms - high horses, seeking the limelight, pride going before a fall, etc. To me, those who wield their values and issues as a weapon of
divisiveness, should not be surprised when they have them used against them at some point when their power wanes. It occurs to me if the poor children and
family members have a complaint, it would be with their father and not with the newspaper.
Somewhere between not killing the messenger for delivering bad news and the sensationalistic freak show that passes for journalism these days, lies a nirvana where information is balanced with discretion. Definitely not in play here.

Back to MJ. Yesterday, home for lunch - 16 tv stations broadcasting the memorial. 16. Later, home from work, evening. I turn on the tv & 2 stations are
re-broadcasting the entire thing, and several other stations are running even more "specials" about MJ. Something is seriously wrong with our culture
& I don't care if the guy was the biggest musical genius ever in the whole history of the world.

Funny, we catch ourselves going on about others ridiculously going on and on...and so it goes, hard to free ourselves from entanglement; just a comment on
one's disagreement with a particular social activity perpetuates the social activity....
We are social animals for sure! |

V - At first I thought "well, no, that's not right", but the more I think about it, the more I think you may have a point. I think commenting on
one's disagreement with an activity is perhaps not as equal to the act of engaging in said activity, but it perpetuates it. I am thinking of using
your quotes in a blog post I am working on. It is coming slowly, but your ideas tie in with some stuff I've been thinking.
My neighbor is a member of the Texas State Rifle Association - he regularly shoots in competitions at 600 yards with no scope (and has been both the Texas State Champ & Louisiana State Champ). I talked about this to one of our employees one day, who was astounded at the idea of 600 yards with no scope (I agree, although I think there are even those who shoot 1000 yards with no scope). This employee mentioned it to his neighbor - a good old boy dumb-ass (truly!) who, you know, hunts n fishes n knows everthang & good old boy said well, that is just BS - ain't nobody can do that, they's liars. Well. my neighbor (the one who can & does do this on a regular basis) happened to drop by work yesterday, and our employee mentioned to him that his neighbor said all that 600 yard stuff was BS, and my neighbor had the right response - tell him it is, he said. An example of not perpetuating the crap. Perfect response. I aspire to get there. Thanks for making me think! Debi |
