I am deeply sorry to hear of the huge loss of life and sorrow inflicted on the families, friends and our brothers and sisters there in Austin, Texas, and
throughout the US yesterday. Sincere condolences to you all. Such an unnecessary and sad event... I wish all this senseless violence that surrounds us,
envelops our kids and clouds the grande beauty we could revel in everyday would go away. I read something lovely this week about birdsongs. Maybe on here.
Anyway, "Every morning we could listen for the song of birds and smiling draw the sounds into our hearts. And throughout the day too. It is difficult to
imagine that activity and any form of violence coexisting." M1

Yes Maggie .... the events at Fort Hood at first seemed extraordinary, but on reflection and after watching and trying to understand the reports about the incident, one fundamental question perplexes me. Why has it taken all this time for a US citizen, who just happens to be a psychiatric practitioner, and a Muslim, in the US military to totally "lose the plot" and do something horrific like this?? I in NO way condone what he did, but am not at all surprised by his deeds. I can only pray that his actions are considered in the context of the bewildering, unprecedented conditions in which he acted. Mercy is a precious commodity, I can only hope that it comes into play when this tragic event is considered. Michael |

Mercy | ||

Michael, I'd like you to elaborate on the "mercy" piece. I "learned" that I am not a vengeful person, but....found that is not the way
justice is delivered in our courts. I just wanted to understand better your view on this and with this particular event.
Maggie, thank you for that beautiful quote. I find truth and peace in the music of birds, but have not thought to draw that vision into practice when I need it at other times. Thank you. What a life I would enjoy without the knowledge of violence. love....the best 4 letter word. |

Michael - Me too. I'm not sure what you mean by mercy, or what it is you expect could happen that would not be merciful. I also don't understand when
you say you are not surprised by his deeds. ???? "Bewildering, unprecented conditions in which he acted'?
Mercy is indeed a precious commodity, but there are times . . . well, I don't really know what to say. I felt no mercy for the men who dragged James Byrd (I believe his name was) to death in Jasper, TX., I felt none for Tim McVeigh. No one asked that I should. I know you are not condoning this man's horrific actions, but am confused by your concern that he be shown mercy. Perhaps he should have shown some himself? Debi |

A plea for mercy for every killer that comes up for trial, I'd understand...I'm totally against the death penalty, but I don't understand why this
particular one merits any special mercy.

Hi Everybody,
My piece above about the awful Camp Hood events is muddle headed ... and it was based on an (incorrect) report that Nidal Hasan's actions were some kind of psychotic episode brought on by the stresses of the circumstances he found himself in. Therefore, if the information about his background, his beliefs, and his ideology that has since been published is correct, that would completely change my attitude toward the shootings and what the consequences may be. Apologies to those who were understandably perplexed by my previous post ......... Michael |

Lots of unanswered questions | ||

As everyone else, I was shocked and horrified to hear of the shootings at Fort Hood and my thoughts and sympathy go to those who have lost family members and
friends. I can't imagine how shocked, bewildered and devastated they must be feeling. Nothing I, or anyone else, can say here means anything much against
that unimaginable pain.
But there are so many questions. The military, the war machine, the need for defence is a sensitive subject and I certainly am not qualified or comfortable commenting on the mechanics of the military or the whys and wherefores of what happened. But after reading and hearing various reports and analyses in the media, I have to say the scariest piece of information I have seen is the fact that Fort Hood has 'lost' at least 75 of its soldiers to suicide since 2001. Hundreds more lives have been lost in combat which is tragic enough in itself ...but 75 suicides! Where is the outrage being expressed at this loss? What is being done? And then there is the untold misery from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which, according to reports, affects more personnel at Fort Hood than any other US military base. I understand Fort Hood is the jumping off place for tours to overseas combat zones but am no less horrified. I know suicide and PTSD are common to service people here in Australia, too, and all over the world, and is not unique to Fort Hood, but it distresses me no end to think that we continually subject good people to such unnatural and overwhelmingly painful stress situations full stop! let alone without adequate support and care. Nothing excuses what the gunman, Hasan, has done. And obviously the reasons he did it are many and varied and beyond comprehension at this stage. However it seems that one of his main issues was his imminent deployment to Iraq. More questions - Why was this man in the US army if he didn't want to totally surrender his will to that of the military juggernaut? Surely in swearing the oath of loyalty to the military he was fully aware that he might at sometime be deployed to a country such as Iraq? But then I would ask why was it that he had to be sent to Iraq, anyway, when he obviously had such fierce objections? He is a psychiatrist for goodness sake. Was this one obviously unbalanced and volatile man so critical to the success of operations in Iraq? I'm sure that the Iraq thing aside he would have found some reason or other to vent his frustrations down the track but maybe things could have been different if the pressure of an Iraq tour was taken away?????????????......aaaah.........what if? what if? what if? It's just all so pointless and destructive and, for me, just serves to prove that wars, the military, the whole mindset around conflict to resolve disputes and differences is an outdated, archaic, mindless, wasteful, power-tripping, resource-draining, environmentally destructive construct which is particularly disrespectful of human life regardless of which side you are fighting on. No, I don't know how to solve the problems of greed and power and hate and anger of the world without the military but it's pretty clear to me that the military obviously don't know either! That's me! I do wish us all peace in our world and our hearts. Sue |

Aaaahhh! I sure do I pick my days to do a rant about armed conflict though... Veteran's Day in the US and Rememberence Day In Oz. I logged on here, read the sentiments expressed and just got caught up in it all. I do apologise to anyone who may have been offended by my post on this day of respect. I don't regret my words but do apologise for the timing. What is past is past and I am grateful and indebted to those who have fought in past conflicts, particularly those conscripted to the cause, including a couple of my close friends. Just wish we could learn from the past and do it all differently now instead of continuing to make the same mistakes at such human cost. I sometimes just get so overwhelmed by the chaos in our world.
